Especially landed knights who come from ancient houses, and who have extensive lands and a large, strong castle may actually be more powerful than many smaller lordlings. It is certainly possible that a landed knight has more lands and wealth than a small lord. ![]() And although knights are often ranked below lords, certain landed knights might actually be more powerful than lesser lords. However, the title of a knight has its own prestige, as it cannot be inherited. It is mostly the title which sets the two apart, as the title of lord is generally considered to be more prestigious than the title “ser”. Īlthough lords hold certain legal rights (e.g., the right of pit and gallows) which knights do not have, and outrank knights at tourney’s and feasts, certain landed knights can be lord in all but name. Receiving your knighthood from a king, prince, Kingsguard knight, or legendary knight holds great prestige. įurther, a young knight's repute partially derives from the honor of the man who conferred knighthood on him. For example, Lord Caswell of Bitterbridge had his only son and heir, a weakling, knighted. Regardless, at times, a lord's son is knighted without fulfilling the requirements. Doing otherwise would lose honor rather than gain it, and would make a lord and his family be held up to ridicule. ![]() Knighthood is seen as primarily a martial position, so even the sons of powerful lords are not necessarily knighted if they are incapable of fulfilling the requirements. Social pressure keeps knighthood from being exploited by unscrupulous knights who might give the accolade for money. Puncturing the fish in this spot should create a hole in the fish’s swim bladder that allows the trapped gases to escape. Until you get more experienced at venting properly, it really only takes a minimal puncture to release excess gasses. Tip: When using a venting tool or any sharp object intended on venting or puncturing the fish, use your thumb and forefinger as a guard to stop the venting tool or object from puncturing the fish too deeply. Team Marine and Ohero both make good specialized venting tools that are inexpensive and high-quality. Most venting tools are large-gauge hollow needles that allow gasses to escape through their chambers. Lift the fish’s scale and make an insertion at a 45-degree angle through the fish’s skin using a sharp object such as a venting tool or specialized needle. To vent the fish, start at the base of the pectoral fin and move about one to two inches behind the base with your finger. Once you have done this, you are ready to vent your fish. Hold your fish gently but firmly in place here. Some people like to put a wet towel down in the resting spot for better stability and to keep the fish wet. Next, find a good spot on the boat such as a bait cutting board or cooler to rest the fish on. Venting Your Fishįirst, try to get the fish on board quickly with as little handling of the fish as possible. Time is of the essence once you determine a fish needs to be vented. Is the fish bloated and floating on the surface? Are its’ eyes bulging? Is it’s stomach sticking out of its’ mouth? Are the intestines sticking out of the back?Īnswering yes to these questions is an indication that your fish needs to be vented before being released. ![]() ![]() Once you’ve hooked your fish and gotten it to the surface, it should be fairly simple to determine whether your fish is experiencing barotrauma. How to Vent A Fish Vent your fish by making a small puncture at a 45-degree angle behind the pectoral fin. In this article, we go over how to properly vent a fish experiencing barotrauma, common fish venting mistakes and what fish species need to be vented. This allows the fish to swim back to the bottom to a safer environment. Venting is the process used to release the gases in the fish’s swim bladder. They frequently die from stress, exposure to the elements and by being an easy meal for other predators. In this condition, the fish cannot swim back to the bottom due to their expanded swim bladder. This can cause their stomachs and intestines to protrude from their orifices. When bottom fish are pulled up from sizable depths around 30 feet or more, their swim bladders - which control buoyancy and help fish maintain their position in the water column - expand with gases. It’s also important to ensure that we manage our reef fish populations in the best manner possible. This skill is necessary to properly release undersized and out-of-season fish. One of the most critical things to know how to do when offshore fishing is how to properly vent grouper, snapper and other bottom fish in order to release them safely. ![]() A shame considering it had some bright spots in it.Įdit: That's not even touching on class balance either, as they made the typical soldier types nigh-godlike in the game with the heavily reduced map size. The story sucked, sure, but that was a small part in a long list (for me at least) of why the game sucked so badly. The game was changed up, because Sega admitted to wanting to go after an entirely different audience instead of the one it had built up. The game was a bloody mess in general, and sales reflected it. Any threat he has loses any credibility when a cannon you get extremely easily early on from an ace unit for your tank is easily able to one shot him.Īnd that 'fluff' comment applies doubly so to the "certificates" mechanic they added in to handle promotions and job switches. Seriously, when the game tells you "Avoid this guy, he's supposed to be scary and one-shot everything no problem!". Or at least force them to research it instead of just getting it. They should of toned down Ace tank parts, and a specific line of guns especially (people who played 2 know exactly the weapon I mean), to ensure that it didn't make the game so completely one-sided in your favor. They should of dropped all the annoying crap they put in just to fluff out crafting and exasperate people trying to do it. Now, I liked what they did overall with the tank mechanics, and even the research tree. And the entire game was so horribly unbalanced that it was, quite honestly, impossible to find a challenge within it. They didn't even bother trying to 'spruce' up the boss to make his mechanics any different than VC 1. The ending fight was less referential than it was a total bloody rip-off, copy and paste, of the first game. At the same time, we convert back to hex using the toString() method, with an argument of 16 (meaning we want to use radix-16 or “base 16” in our final representation of the number). We do that in Line 9, with the logical-AND against 255. When we’re finished looping, we need to be sure to constrain the sum to an 8-bit value. Note that the number sum is essentially a 32-bit integer, behind the scenes, meaning our final value could be much larger than 255. We start (in Line 3) by parsing the hex input into two-nibble chunks using the regular expression /./g - which means find substrings that match the pattern “anything followed by anything” (that’s what the two dots mean), and do it globally (that’s what the ‘g’ means).” The result is an array, s, of two-digit hex values.Īt Line 5, we enter a loop (using the forEach iteration construct) in which we convert the string version of a two-nibble hex value to an actual number that we can operate on. If we use “48656C6C6F20776F726C6421” as input to the above function, the output will be “5d,” which is the hex value of the final 8-bit sum. The input to this function is expected to be a hexstring that looks something like “48656C6C6F20776F726C6421” (which, in this case, is the hex version of the ASCII string “Hello world!”). Var n = 1 * ('0x' + hexbyte) // convert hex to number The conventional 8-bit checksum is just what it sounds like: a sum of all bytes values in the input, with any overflow (from carry operations) discarded. Let’s take a look at how to calculate LRC, checksum, and CRC using JavaScript. But some techniques are definitely better than others. Notice, earlier, I said these data-integrity techniques can tell you whether data is “likely to have been corrupted.” No checksum technique is 100% foolproof in the general case, for arbitrary-length data. The latter isn’t really a checksum in the usual sense but is an example of a one-way hash that falls in the “linear congruential generator” family. Three of the most popular ones are the conventional checksum, LRC (longitudinal redundancy check), and CRC (cyclic redundancy check). You’ll find a wide array of checksum techniques in common use. If so, the recipient can infer that the message probably (arguably) wasn’t altered in transit. If you add all the bytes of a message together and find (neglecting overflow) that the sum is 96, then you tack that number onto the message before sending it, the recipient can repeat your summation on the first N – 1 byte of the message, and compare the result to the final byte to see if it’s 96. ¹ Inverting the hexadecimal number means converting it to binary, flipping the bits, and converting it to hexadecimal again.Checksums of various kinds are commonly used in data communication protocols to allow the recipient of a message to determine, quickly and easily, whether the data is likely to have been corrupted in transit. See the Wikipedia entry for more information. If the checksum is 0xFFFF, as in our case, the IPv4 header is intact.Again, there's a carry count so we add that to the rest to get 0xFFFF: bc The recipient of the IPv4 packet then creates the checksum of the received header in the same way: Invert¹ 0x2C8B to get the checksum: 0xD374įinally, insert the checksum into the header: 45 00 00 34 5F 7C 40 00 40 06 C0 A8 B2 14 C6 FC CE 19.The leading digit 4 is the carry count, we add this to the rest of the number to get 0x2C8B: bc Let's see how the sender of the packet calculates the header checksum: We can mentally split up this header as a sequence of ten 16-bit values: 0x4500, 0x0034, 0x5F7C, etc. The checksum's value is initially set to zero. The two bytes in square brackets is where the checksum will go. The sender hasn't calculated the checksum yet. ![]() ![]() These are the twenty bytes of our example packet header: 45 00 00 34 5F 7C 40 00 40 06 C0 A8 B2 14 C6 FC CE 19 Consequently, it should be easy to reproduce the results on Linux by copy-pasting the commands. In the following example, I use bc, printf and here strings to calculate the header checksum and verify it. Here's a complete example with a real header of an IPv4 packet. It was fun to pair off against both the computer and other humans, often recounting time-tested tactics of our youth and developing new ones.Ĭommand & Conquer Generals is availiable for Windows on both Origin and Amazon as part of the “Command and Conquer Ultimate Collection”, and is a must-play for those looking for a great RTS experience with a touch of nostalgia. ![]() While we only had time to play the US campaigns, we watched the cutscenes for every faction and re-immersed ourselves in a lore we enjoyed as teenagers.
